West Bengal Sonarpur Aarohi Club Creates History with Mt Brammah 1 Summit at Kishtwar, jammu & Kashmir
Kishtwar, Thursday, July 20, 2023: The West Bengal Sonarpur Aarohi Club achieved an extraordinary feat of courage and determination by successfully conquering the summit of Mt Brammah 1 in the Kishtwar Himalayas on July 18, 2023. This challenging peak is renowned for its technical difficulty and has been a dream for mountaineers worldwide ever since British mountaineer Chris Bonnington first scaled it nearly fifty years ago.

Making history and breaking records, the skilled and eminent mountaineers of the West Bengal Sonarpur Aarohi Club became the first Indian expedition to reach the pinnacle of Mt Brammah 1. This remarkable achievement not only fills the nation with pride but also elevates mountaineering standards on a global scale.
The triumphant summit followed meticulous planning and coordination with the Kishtwar district administration, along with various government and military bodies. While the expedition officially commenced on July 16, adverse weather conditions, including whiteout and heavy snowfall, forced the team to abandon their initial attempt.

Amidst these challenges, one of the Sherpa members fell approximately 70 meters, but fortunately, he survived with minor injuries, shock, and snow blindness while searching for an alternate route to the summit. Undeterred, the team decided to await his recovery and launched a second attempt within 30 hours.
On the midnight of July 17, the team set out once more, and by approximately 10:30 am on July 18, they triumphantly reached the summit of Mt Brammah 1. The team recorded the height as 6426 meters, slightly different from the topo map's mentioned elevation of 6416 meters, based on readings from four devices.

A total of nine climbing members and five Sherpas contributed to this momentous feat, with an additional three members coordinating activities from the base camp. The unwavering teamwork and determination of the entire expedition played a vital role in achieving this historic milestone.
Upon their safe return to the Base Camp on July 19 at 8:30 pm, the team expressed heartfelt gratitude to the Kishtwar district administration for their unwavering support throughout the expedition. They also extended their thanks to the Indian Army 17RR, Police, Forest Department, KDA, and the local team, which included Ravinder Singh Thakur, Bhanu Badyal, Rajesh Thakur, Avleen Bhutiyal, and two local youth from Kishtwar who recently joined the endeavor.
