Kishtwar Handicrafts Receive a Significant Boost with New Cooperative Registrations

Kishtwar, April 30, 2025 - In a move poised to significantly empower the local artisan and weaver community, the district of Kishtwar witnessed a pivotal moment today as Deputy Commissioner (DC) Kishtwar, Sh. Rajesh Kumar Shavan (JKAS), officially distributed registration certificates to newly established Industrial Handicrafts Cooperative Societies. This initiative falls under the purview of the Financial Support Scheme administered by the Department of Handicrafts and Handloom, Jammu, signaling a strong commitment to bolstering the region's traditional crafts sector.
The certificate distribution ceremony, graced by the presence of Assistant Director Handicrafts Kishtwar, Sh. Pardeep Shan (JKAS), formally recognized the establishment of two key cooperative societies: United Crewel Handicrafts INDUSCO Ltd. and Vibrant Crewel Handicrafts INDUSCO Ltd. These entities have been duly registered under the Directorate of Handicrafts and Handloom, Jammu, marking a crucial step towards organized growth and empowerment within the local handicrafts landscape.
These cooperative societies have been formed under the guiding principles of the Self-Reliant Cooperative Act, 1999. This legislation aims to cultivate and support micro-enterprises that are deeply rooted in the rich artistic heritage of the region. The registration of these societies is expected to provide a structured platform for artisans and weavers to collectively benefit from government support and market access.
A key highlight of this initiative is the financial assistance extended to each registered society. Comprising 11 artisans or weavers, each cooperative will receive a total of Rs. 1.00 lakh. This financial aid will be disbursed in two equal, non-refundable installments, providing crucial capital to fuel their operations and growth. Furthermore, the scheme extends beyond mere financial support, encompassing dedicated marketing initiatives designed to amplify the visibility and market reach of the exquisite local crafts produced in Kishtwar.
DC Kishtwar, Sh. Rajesh Kumar Shavan, lauded the proactive efforts of the Handicrafts Department in facilitating the formation and registration of these cooperatives. He underscored the paramount importance of expanding the reach of such beneficial schemes to encompass a wider spectrum of artisans and weavers across the district. In this regard, he directed the Assistant Director to intensify outreach and registration campaigns throughout Kishtwar. This strategic directive aims to ensure that the advantages offered by government schemes are effectively disseminated to all eligible members of the artisan community, fostering a more inclusive and empowered handicrafts sector.
The event also saw the presence of Mr. Abid, Supervisor INDUSCO, alongside dedicated officials and staff members from the Handicrafts Department. This collective effort underscores the commitment of the local administration and the concerned department towards nurturing and promoting the unique artistic talents prevalent in Kishtwar. The registration of these Industrial Handicrafts Cooperative Societies marks a significant stride in providing the necessary organizational and financial framework for the sustained growth and prosperity of the region's cherished handicraft traditions.
