"In the sacred Nanth Nala of Dachhan Valley, the holy abode of Shiv Parivar awaits — three naturally formed ice lingams of Lord Shiva, Mata Parvati, and Lord Ganesha, a mystical cave where milky water descends from heaven, and the majestic Brahma Peak standing eternal sentinel above. This is Hudh Mata — Kishtwar's most spiritually profound Himalayan pilgrimage."

| Shree Hudh Mata Yatra 2026: Official Dates, Chari Mubarak Schedule, & Dachhan Trek Guide |
Nestled at an altitude of approximately 2,900 metres (8,500 feet) amidst the pristine mountains of the Dachhan Valley in District Kishtwar, the annual Shree Hudh Mata Yatra is one of the most revered spiritual pilgrimages of the Chenab Valley. Every year, thousands of devotees undertake this sacred seven-day journey through Himalayan forests, high-altitude meadows, and ancient mountain trails to seek the blessings of Maa Hudh Mata (Mata Parvati) and experience the divine phenomena of Trisandhya Jal Dhara, Braham Sarovar, Doodh Ganga, and the magnificent Brahma Peak.
The yatra has evolved from a local pilgrimage attended only by the people of Dachhan into a major regional spiritual event that is now officially recognised and welcomed by the Directorate of Tourism, Jammu and the District Administration Kishtwar, drawing devotees from across Jammu & Kashmir and other parts of India.
Spiritual Significance of Hudh Mata
The shrine of Hudh Mata is an abode of the Shiv Parivar, just like Shiv Khori in Reasi district. "Hudh Mata" is the local name of Paarvati Mata, derived from the Sanskrit word Hutti or Ahuti — pointing to Mata Parvati who, in her previous incarnation as Mata Sati, resorted to self-immolation in the yagya of her father, after she could not bear the insult inflicted on Lord Shiva by her arrogant father Daksh Prajapati.
As per local legend, after the yogic self-immolation of Mata Parvati in the Yagya of Daksh Prajapati, Lord Shiva came to know of the tragedy, destroyed the Yagya, and beheaded Daksh Prajapati. He then took Mata Sati's dead body on his shoulders and wandered the universe. Lord Vishnu cut the body into 52 pieces with his Sudarshan Chakra, and when Lord Shiva reached Nanth Nala in Dachhan, He disappeared here along with a portion of the sacred body — making this one of the most spiritually significant spots in the entire Himalayan region.
The annual yatra is held on Haar Shudi Ashtami — the 8th day of the bright lunar fortnight of Haar — in accordance with the ancient Hindu calendar tradition that has governed this pilgrimage since it was first organized in the early 1980s.
▶ Sacred Sites of the Hudh Mata Yatra
- Sacred Cave — Nanth Nala: In the Nanth Nala of Dachhan, a cave houses three naturally formed ice lingams of Lord Shiva, Mata Parvati, and their son Ganesha. From the ceiling of the cave, milky lime water oozes out of a naturally sculptured udder and teats and falls in the form of droplets onto the three sacred lingams. Elderly locals say a Kund once existed inside the cave where darshan of the Shiv Parivar could be had by torch light.
- Trisandhya Jal Dhara: A mysterious sacred stream that appears and disappears in an extraordinary manner, changing its flow and receding naturally. Bathing in its holy waters is considered highly auspicious and spiritually purifying.
- Braham Sarovar: Located at the foot of Brahma Peak, the Braham Sarovar is surrounded by various types of natural wildflowers and looks beautiful during the yatra days. Pilgrims take a ritual bath here seeking divine blessings and spiritual purification.
- Doodh Ganga: A spring in which sand mixes with water and creates a milky appearance — that is why it is called Doodh Ganga (Milk River). Pilgrims have a holy bath here on the morning of the shrine visit.
- Brahma Peak: One side of this magnificent peak is always covered with snow and clouds and is considered the abode of Lord Brahma. The peak towers over the entire sacred landscape and offers breathtaking Himalayan views.
