Revival of the Organised Yatra — 1987
While Machail has been a locus of local devotion for centuries, the formal organised pilgrimage was revived in the late 20th century. Thakur Kulveer Singh of Bhaderwah is credited with formalising the Yatra. After visiting the shrine in 1981, he initiated the Chhari procession tradition in 1987, transforming it into the large, well-organised pilgrimage it is today — drawing pilgrims from Jammu, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Delhi, and beyond.
The Holy Chhari Procession
A mace (Chhari) of Goddess Chandi Mata was carried by devotees from village Chinote, Bhaderwah — home of Thakur Kulbir Singh Ji, its custodian — with devotees singing bhajans amidst drums, flutes, and mantras. Now, the Chhari of Maa Machail departs from Mahalaxmi Mandir, Jammu to the holy shrine at Machail.
The Chhari's Sacred Journey — Stage by Stage 2026
Chhari departs from Mahalaxmi Mandir, Pacca Danga, Jammu with prayers, devotional singing, and grand ceremony.
Yatra reaches Pul Doda at midday, with pilgrims joining at every stage.
Procession passes through these significant stops, growing with pilgrims who join at every village.
Chhari received at Shri Gori Shankar Mandir Sarkoot, Kishtwar — rests overnight with prayers and bhajans. Thousands of Kishtwaris turn out to honour the goddess's mace.
The Yatra moves from Kishtwar towards Atholi, the gateway to Paddar, then onwards to Gulabgarh with growing crowds and devotion.
Chhari arrives at Machail Bhawan to grand celebration. Maha Yaga culminates in Puran Ahoti — a sacred fire offering.
Hawan Puja at Machail Bhawan on 23rd. Return of the Chhari on 24th formally concludes the grand Chhari Yatra.
Closure of peak Yatra season facilities officially.

The Trek — A Journey Through Nature's Cathedral
The entire trail from Atholi to Machail is a journey through one of the most magnificent natural landscapes in India — landlocked by lush forests of Deodar, Kail, Fir, Spruce, oaks, and Himalayan herbs. The Bhaga river is your constant companion along much of the route — sometimes flowing alongside you, sometimes charging ahead with roaring echoes and foaming waves against perpendicular cliff faces. The rivers Chandra and Bhaga confluence at Atholi.
Along the way you pass many remote villages including Matti, Leondi, Hamiddran, Massu, Mao, Garh, Ligree (population ~1,000, with hamlets of Doordo, Stangarhi, Thatak, Shahalee, Totee, Pondale, and Tunkhel) and many others. The entire belt is dotted with hot and cold springs — considered sacred miracles of nature by the people of Paddar.
🥾 Updated for 2026: The new road extension to Darshani Dwar near Machail Mata Shrine has reduced actual trekking to just half an hour — making the Yatra accessible to far more pilgrims than ever before. Pony and Palki services are also available on the route for elderly and differently-abled devotees.
